Identity theft is an increasingly pressing concern as the global economy has become highly dependent on online banking transactions.
Currently, the Internet Initiative Network is working with international authorities to reduce the amount of identity theft that occurs each day. The IIN, which was established in 1982 by George Barker, attracts the leading computer scientists from around the world. Its aim is to reduce the amount of identity theft by over 70% within ten years, and to show governments how they can implement regulattions that place tighter controls on electronic banking.
A recent research report from the Internet Initiative Network indicates that over 30% of regular Internet users have been the victim of identity theft. An additional 10% have had their identities exploited for the purpose of illegally transferring money. Although only around one third of the participants in the study revealed how much they had lost in identity scams, it is estimated that around $350 million was lost last year in such incidents. This is the highest amount recorded since the IIN began collating data on identity theft 10 years ago.
When asked why the problem of identity theft had become so big, many participants suggested that the government was to blame for failing to support efforts to improve online security.
